About Junior Surf:

The Junior Surf Programme is designed to encourage children aged 7-13 to develop skills and confidence in the surf environment while having fun. The key objectives of the Junior Surf Programme are:

  • Encourage children to develop confidence in the surf environment.
  • Teach them about beach and surf safety through educational and fun sessions using a variety of resources.
  • Teach them skills that can be used in competitions, in the future as a surf lifeguard, and every day when they are at the beach.
  • Encourage them to interact and socialise in a friendly and inclusive team environment with like-minded children and develop friendships.
  • Enable parents the opportunity to be involved in leadership, coaching, and administration roles, and to help facilitate the positive beach experience for the kids.
  • Provide interested and competitive children the opportunity to put their new skills to the test competing against other clubs in the Coromandel, in and other North Island competitions.
  • Inspire children to become surf lifeguards in the future.

NOTE: Age groups are based on the 1st of October. This is a surf lifesaving NZ policy.

Parent Helpers:

To ensure we can meet Surf Lifesaving’s health and safety criteria, we are required to run the Junior Surf Programme water activities with an adult-to-child ratio of 1:5. To meet these requirements all we ask is that parents assist occasionally and don the yellow vest. It is a great way to interact with your children as they wade around you, or help them catch waves on their boards! Plus, it is a great way to meet other parents involved in the programme too. If you aren’t a designated parent helper on a given day, you are still responsible for your children and their safe supervision. We would love it if our parents/caregivers could bring wet gear to each session to help in the water during activities should you be able to.

Rookie Lifeguards:

The Rookie Lifeguard Programme is run from 9:45am-11am for 13-year olds. It focuses on core surf lifeguard skills to prepare the children for their Surf Lifeguard award the following season. Participants get to patrol with the lifeguards to learn what they do. All participants must have a 200m swim time under 4min 30sec. Participants are loaned the blue and white Rookie Lifeguard uniform to wear for the Rookie programme and on patrol. Because these are loaned, they are to be returned at the end of the season (Easter weekend at the latest). It is strongly recommended that participants purchase fins prior to the season start. (Pauanui does not have a supply of fins to sell).

    Key Dates:

    - Stay tuned, these are subject to change each season

Due to the demand for more training prior to our carnival, we have decided to introduce an optional pre-christmas week starting 18th December for no additional cost. The goal of this week will be increasing skills for carnivals.

17 December, 26 December: Uniform Collection at the Pauanui SLSC Lodge Office, 1 Just In Time, Pauanui. Time tbc

Monday 18 December - Friday 19 January: Junior Surf every day Monday - Friday, 9:45-11am. Please assemble in front of Pauanui SLSC Tower.

Monday 1 January: Pauanui SLSC Door Knock Appeal.

Pauanui Junior Surf Carnival 5th January

    Requirements:

Due to new health and safety requirements we are adopting yellow hi vis vests as our uniform policy. All participants must wear the hi vis vest and the club beanie to participate, both of which will be available for purchase during registration days or through the club website. Participants may wear their own rash vests, club rash vests, or wetsuits underneath for sun safety.

No beanie and hi vis = no participation.

It is the law that all children under 14 years of age must be supervised by a parent/caregiver when in the water. Therefore, all parents/caregivers are required to sign their child in each day and are responsible for their child throughout the session.

All children are expected to be prepared to get wet and have fun!

    Membership:

Membership subs must be paid online. Online registration can be completed at: Click here

Please note this year subs have changed in price to better cover the expenses involved in providing a top notch programme.

    Door Knock:

Our annual Door Knock appeal will be on Monday 1 Jan in the evening. We need everyone’s support to assist with this to help get new and improved Junior Surf gear and allow the lifeguards to continue their service on the beach.  Once your area has been completed, there will be a BBQ and drinks provided by the club as a thank you.

    Junior Surf Facebook Group:

Join our Facebook group called Pauanui SLSC Junior Surf.  This group will be the only form of contact this season (no emails will be sent) and is important to keep in the loop with everything that is going on, and day-to-day changes.

    Junior Surf Committee: Applications open!

The Junior Surf Committee is made up of passionate parents and lifeguards who are responsible for the overall running and planning of Junior Surf for the season and wish to make Junior Surf grow into the best it can be! We are always looking for some fun and eager parents to join the team, share ideas and assist however big or small.
