    Special Mention

    Martine Smith:
Martine has done a fantastic job organising and instructing our trainee Lifeguards and has been a valuable and mature member of her patrols. She has also been very committed over the winter months and gained some more qualifications including her First Aid Level One and Radio Operator award and has undertaken the role of Rookie Regional Guard and worked along side our Regional Guards this summer.

    Lauren Bracken:
Lauren has done a fantastic job organising and instructing our Rookie Lifeguards and has been a valuable and mature member of her patrols. She has also been very committed over the winter months and gained some more qualifications including her IRB Crewmans and First Aid Level Two award.

    Matt Williams:
Matt has undertaken a large role in the past couple of years as the Clubs Chief Instructor and has over seen a couple of guards to complete their instructors awards and many others who have helped to instruct our up and coming guards.
Matt has also progressed to a Senior Lifeguard and Pauanui Head Guard of the Bay of Plenty Regional Lifeguard Service this season.  He has undertaken much more than would be required of a Head Guard, such as getting club equipment fixed, watching over instruction of younger guards, organising some sports and social events such as adventures into caves and waterfalls and swimming competitions.

    Annabel Reid:
Annabel has been seconded onto the our Surf Clubs Lifeguard Committee and has been an enthusiastic and committed member of the committee who was always willing to help. She has been an excellent senior member of one of our patrols and performed her duties with no complaints and helped to provide a fun and inviting atmosphere for our younger guards

    David Beorsen:
David has achieved some great things in the past year including gaining recognition from Surf Life Saving Bay of Plenty for his contribution to the surf life saving within the District. David has been involved in many different parts of the organisation and has been an important member of our hard working Executive Committee. This season Dave has once again been a great Patrol captain and mentor to many of our younger guards.
Allenie Smith - Paunaui Club Captain presents Dave Boersen with his service award on behalf of Surf Lifesaving Bay of Plenty

Surf Life Saving Bay of Plenty and Surf Life Saving New Zealand Rescue of the Month – January

  • Matt Williams (Regional Lifeguard) (Pauanui SLSC)
  • Jake Smith (Regional Lifeguard) (Pauanui SLSC)
  • Jacinta Gibbons-Huranui (Regional Lifeguard) (Whiritoa SLSC)
  • Spencer Raymond (Regional Lifeguard) (Tairua SLSC)
  • Luke Yabsley (Regional Lifeguard) (UK Exchange Lifeguard)
  • James McNeil
  • Martine Smith
  • Shaun Moran
  • Alex Wheeler
  • Tyler Bracken
  • Becky Pennell (Rookie Lifeguard Trainnee)

These guards have been awarded for their mass rescue of five victims (aged 2yrs-54yrs)  during a closed beach patrol, when the victims boat was upturned on the treacherous Pauanui bar.

This rescue was especially outstanding due to the cohesive and well resourced teamwork between the Regional Lifeguards, Volunteer lifeguards and Rookie lifeguard. The forward thinking and knowledge applied during the rescue, from the treatment of the patients to the preparation and exit of the rescue helicopter, was noted by all personnel involved.
